Imagine going from being a starting quarterback to being demoted to third string, then to fourth string, and finally to being released. And what's interesting about the whole situation? It all takes place the same week! Jones was benched on Monday and by Friday, he's CUT.
The Daniel Jones experience in New York is an embarrassing ABJECT failure. New York shocked the world when they selected Jones sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke. After Jones and the Giants had a good run in 2022, the Giants signed him to a four-year, $160 million extension, and soon everything went downhill very fast. In 2023, Jones first missed time due to a neck injury, and soon suffered a knee injury upon his return. That injury was a torn ACL, ruling him out for the season. He finished 2023 with a 1-5 record.
Jones' 2024 run ends with a 2-8 record. His stint with the Giants ends with a record of 24-44-1 as New York's starting quarterback. The Giants will start Tommy DeVito this week. The Giants signed veteran QB Tim Boyle to their practice squad earlier this week and moved Drew Lock to second-string.
The release of Jones is for the best for both Jones and the New York Giants. Had Jones sustained an injury next year while still with the team, he'd have collected $23 million in guaranteed income. He had full guarantees this season and last. The Giants couldn't take a chance with that $23 million injury situation. In a conference, Jones expressed regret for "not producing enough victories" and insisted he was "processing his future".
Jones is expected to clear waivers and be picked up. However, it's unlikely that any team has any interest in picking up the rest of his current deal with New York.
